Kisumu Children’s Remand Home: Storytelling

At the heart of every child at Kisumu Children’s Remand Home’s journey is a dream, a goal they aspire to reach, whether it’s their own or influenced by those around them. However, sometimes the path to these dreams is clouded with uncertainty and challenges. That’s why reflection plays such a vital role in understanding where we are and where we want to go.

On January 14, 2025 during our session with children at Kisumu Children’s Remand Home, we facilitated a session that allowed the children to reflect on their dreams and the challenges they face in achieving them. Through the art of storytelling, we created a space for these young individuals to explore the paths to their future success.

Exploring Dreams and Overcoming Challenges
Mostly, we are stuck in the situation we are in because we ask ourselves how we want to achieve the dreams we aspire to and get to the place we want to be. With this in mind, the session delved into questions such as;

  • What challenges might stop you from achieving your expectations?
  • What would help you overcome these challenges?
  • What worries you the most about this year?
  • What changes would you like to see in your environment (both at the remand home and back at home) to help you achieve your dream?

Through storytelling, the children highlighted the types of support they need to achieve their goals. This included guidance, encouragement, and creating positive changes in their environment. Recognizing these factors empowered the children to see that, despite the obstacles they may be facing, they have the ability to take control of their journeys with the right and support systems.

Envisioning Change and Creating a Better Future

As part of the activity, the children envisioned the changes they would like to see in their surroundings (both within the remand home and at home in their respective communities). This conversation inspired them to think about how they can advocate for and contribute to making these changes a reality.

By the end of the session, the children had gained clarity on their dreams, the barriers they face, and the support they need to succeed. Storytelling not only facilitated reflection but also enabled the children to take ownership of their journeys.

We remain committed to using approaches like storytelling and art to inspire and empower the children and youth in our communities.
