About us

our story

Okiri is a Luo word meaning mongoose – an intelligent, adaptable, good social orientation, and fierce, was chosen reflecting the energy, optimism and warmth that these young individuals will bring to the program. The traits of a mongoose give an idea of the everyday lives of children and youths who come into conflict with the law.

The idea for the program was formulated after a series of conversations at Kanthari. The founders of Soulevement sought to address the root causes of youth re offending, the urgent need for a better, more holistic approach to rehabilitating young individuals in conflict with the law. They sought to create an intervention that not only addressed immediate needs but also equipped these young individuals with the necessary skills and support to become capable and contributing members of society.
