About us

our story

Okiri a Luo word meaning mongoose – an intelligent, adaptable, good social orientation, and fierce. It was chosen as it reflects the energy, optimism and warmth that these young individuals bring to the program. The traits of a mongoose give an idea of the everyday lives of children and youths who come into conflict with the law.

Through Okiri, we aim to equip children and youths aged 15 -18 who are in conflict with the law with practical skills and marketable talents to improve their livelihoods and foster personal growth. We collaborate with skilled individuals, families, and stakeholders to prepare the children for a successful transition back into the community.

The idea for the program emerged from a series of conversations in Kanthari, to find a better intervention for young individuals in conflict with the law. Recognizing the urgent need for an intervention, the founders of Soulevement sought to create a program that would not only address the immediate needs of these young people but also go deeper into the root causes, to give them the necessary skills, to re-enter the community as capable and contributing members

The Problem

Children in juvenile remand homes in Kenya, face challenges that limit their potential for rehabilitation and reintegration. Limited access to psychological and educational support, and minimal follow-up after release create an environment where many struggle to transition successfully back into society.

With many of these children coming from disadvantaged backgrounds marked by poverty, family instability, and mental health challenges, the current system often fails to address their diverse needs. This has led to high reoffending rates and a lack of pathways for these youth to rebuild their lives.

Our Approach

Okiri is designed to provide a fresh start for youth transitioning out of juvenile remand homes. Through arts-based therapy, skill-building programs, and family-centered support, we aim to nurture resilience and independence. Our holistic model creates a safe space for personal growth while strengthening community and family ties, empowering youth to reintegrate and thrive in society.

With Okiri, we envision a future where these youth unlock their potential and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
